Ground and rock anchor installation ensures lasting stability
What is an anchor?
Anchors come in many different forms and are often referred to as ground anchors, rock anchors, rock bolts, tension anchors, tension bolts or passive anchors.
An anchor is any tendon that provides restraint to a mass of rock or soil through a bonded or fixed length and a tensioned, free length.
Anchors are usually installed and then tensioned, however, not everything that is installed in the ground and tensioned is necessarily an anchor. A soil nail for instance is often installed, fully grouted and a nominal tension applied to the proximal end, but it is still a soil nail, not an anchor as the preload is intended only for the tensioning of facing systems.
Anchors are used to restrain ground masses, which may range from:
- a single block of rock – in which case, the anchor might be called a rock bolt
- or a large mass of rock – in which case the anchor may be called a rock anchor
- used in soils, or granular materials in conjunction with a hard facing system – in which case they may be called ground anchors
- or used to hold back a retaining wall – in which case they may be simply referred to as an anchor, tensioned anchor or retaining anchor.
All anchors are designed to BS8081/EN1537 standards and often comprise double layers of corrosion protection.
